Welcome to my world! I am Dr. Saju Varghese, an anesthesiologist at ATLAS.

During my long career, I have met people from all walks of life, learnt important values, and enjoyed experiences that have changed my outlook on life. The most important value that I have learned is that it is TEAM WORK that matters most, not personal glory. And I am proud to say that my operation theatre family at ATLAS works as a cohesive and well oiled unit tackling all the challenges that come our way as a team.

I moved to picturesque Oman in 2004 to work at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah. The center was always busy with trauma cases and road traffic accidents. There were plenty of occasions, including occasional airlift cases, where the timely intervention of anesthesiologists saved lives. I worked there at Salalah for 5 ½ years and administered anesthesia in well over 2000 cases. It was a rich experience both professionally and personally, getting to know this country, its people and its culture.

In the last two decades as a doctor and anesthesiologist there have been many incidents that have really moved me. I vividly remember the case of a young 22 year old woman who came in for her very first pregnancy with severe complications. She was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease with Mitral Stenosis, Mitral Regurgitation, Pulmonary Hypertension with Atrial Fibrillation and Pulmonary Edema. The baby had to be delivered through a caesarian section. At the time I was working as the lone anesthesiologist in a missionary hospital at Oddanchatram, a rural area of Tamil Nadu. In the pre-anesthesia clinic, I advised the family and friends to transfer the patient to a tertiary centre since there wasn't a good cardiology backup in the institution. But the patient was so poor they couldn't afford to go anywhere else. So with all the available facilities we managed the case. Needless to say it was a difficult childbirth. At the end of it all though I heard the sound I was waiting for, the baby's first cry, music to my ears. Both the baby and mother were fine. After a month, the young lady returned with her child for a follow-up and came to meet me to say thanks. It was really heart-warming to see the happy smile on her face. That joy, that smile, those are all the rewards I could ever hope for.

I have completed over 2500 cases in a span of 2 years. Not only that, I have completed 500 cases in 3 months and 26 days which I believe is the shortest period of time by a single anesthetist in the history of Oman. I work with a highly efficient team in ATLAS. I owe this achievement to them.

I look forward to making you smile as well and providing you with the best care!
